In July 2013, distribution giant Massmart opened a second Builders Warehouse in Botswana. The Walmart-owned food and general goods retailer stated in the beginning of 2013 that it aimed to open 23 stores across sub-Saharan Africa before the end of the year.
Following the announcement of the erection of the second Builders Warehouse in Botswana, the company noted that it had several new sites approved for the construction of new stores in Africa with a focus on East and West Africa.
Massmart’s expansion will ensure job creation and economic growth for Africa and the expansions could bode well for South Africa, which skills are high in demand.
The International Monetary Fund (IMF) reported that sub-Saharan Africa’s economy is expected to expand by about 5.3 percent in 2013, above the 3.6 percent expected worldwide.
